Artworks Presents: The Uncommon Threads Fiber Show

Opening March 19th, 6 - 9 pm.

Fiber, it envelopes us, coddles us, entrances us, fires our imagination, stimulates our senses. With this in mind Artworks presents the Uncommon Threads show, featuring art by more than a dozen Jersey artists who are decidedly not cut from the same cloth!  An opening reception for Uncommon Threads will take place Saturday, March 19, from 6-9 p.m., with the show on view at Artworks main gallery through April 15. On March 26, a “Day of Fiber Arts” will be held at Artworks in conjunction with the show.

The artists in Uncommon Threads work with fiber in many forms, including textile, yarn, paper and straw. Their techniques range from the traditions of quilting, home-spinning and weaving, to modern approaches such as photographic transfer, found object montage and sculptural felting.

“I wanted to show recognizable materials in innovative forms and uses,” says Uncommon Threads curator Carol Schepps, a nationally recognized fiber artist. “It is my hope to represent and explain the artistry of fiber art through inclusion of quilt, stitchery, paper, natural fibers (such as branches), print, paint, dye, sculpture, and photography,” Schepps says.

Among the artists participating in Uncommon Threads are: Virginia Abrams who creates abstract nature-inspired designs from hand-dyed cottons; Rayna Gillman, whose work has an urban sensibility, often features found and recycled materials. -; Natalia Marguilis, who makes embroidered textiles; Joan Dryer, who addresses social issues using thread, dental x-rays, MRI films and other materials; and Diane Savona, who uses salvaged cloth and garments, domestic found objects, and intense hand stitching to construct fossil specimens. Gloria Hansen's work is about visual ambiguities that merge geometric
shapes with photographic imagery.

“With my stitchery I investigate and express the endless transformation of nature through the seasons from new life to decay,” says Marguillis. “I'm disturbed by how easily we throw away, tear down, and obliterate the past. As I re-purpose the fragments I find, I am giving them new life,” says Gillman.

As part of the show, enjoy Day of Fiber Arts, March 26, 2011 12 – 4 p.m. at Artworks, a day of observing, exploring and creating for youth and adults. The event, held in collaboration with Trenton Knit and Stitch will feature yarn spinning, quilting demos, a  book altering workshop, discussions and more.
